Welcome

This site is generally based on the genealogy of four people: Laura Katherine Reinhardt, Uriah Edward Rheinheimer, Miriam Shively, and Russell Stout. See the surname cloud at the bottom of this page for other key family names.

These families trace mostly to the early American colonial period or to Switzerland, Germany, France, and England. Still trying to figure out why some of us tan so easily. . . .

Latest Update

June 2024 - More detail from the Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines area in France, prompted by a contact from our French Reinhardt cousin, Sandrine Thomas. In addition to providing a wealth of local genealogical research, Sandrine helped write a joint history of how our grandmothers' worlds diverged, partly on the basis of decisions their ancestors made about whether to emigrate or not. A French translation of the history is also available.

Latest News

August 2022 - This update mostly fills in a lot of early Mennonite heritage in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana, with help from the Swiss Anabaptist Genealogy Association.

December 2021 - The main update is in the ancestry of three orphaned daughters in Ohio in the mid-nineteenth century who lost their mother, Maria Eckell and father, Johann Christian Schlappach, within two years, but prospered with help from the new world and the old. Their ancestral families were from the Schwalm river valley in Germany and the Bernese highlands of Switzerland, as documented in the family history of these girls whose parents were 1830's immigrants to Ohio, USA

May 2019 - There is now a history as we currently understand it of the family of George (John) Reinhardt in Alsace, France, before about 1850, along with a companion explanation that documents the records and especially the weak links used to construct this family tree.

February 2019 - New research is mostly into the ancestry of George (John) Reinhardt. Relevant families, many of them Anabaptists of Alsace and earlier Switzerland, are Roth, Frederick, Adam, Muller, Baur, Redelsberger, Dolter, and Depp.

June 2018 - Added more images of original records, mainly for direct ancestors. New people are mostly Wurm/Stout descendants, many of whom wound up in Grand Traverse County, Michigan, or in Wisconsin.

January 2018 - Thanks to Anita Yoder for some excellent content and comments.

27 December 2017 - The site is brand new and still being updated.

Around 2000 - Rollin Rheinheimer let me help him try to find out where John Rheinheimer had come from in Germany. That successful search led eventually to this website.

Mid-1990s - Shirley, Don, and Paige Paulson Rheinheimer researched and wrote a history of the Rheinheimer Family descended from John Rheinheimer and distributed it to their first cousins.
