SL592 JACOB SHIVELYBorn ca. 1748, Lancaster Co., Pa.: died before 3 Feb. 1814, Osnaburg Twp.,Stark Co., Ohio: probably married (1) between Nov. 1766 and Nov. 1768 in FrederickCo., Md., Elizabeth Ulrich, born perhaps ca. 1738, daughter of Stephen Ulrich, Sr., (2)perhaps about 1772, Elizabeth Snyder, who died 7 Aug. 1824, Stark Co., Ohio. Fivechildren, two born in Frederick Co., Md., three in Strabane Twp., Washington Co., Pa.SL5921. JACOB, b. ca. 1767; d. Nov. 1814, Nimishillen Twp., Stark Co., Ohio.SL5922. ULRICH, b. 3 or 4 Dec. 1774; died 12 Jan. 1825, Nimishillen Twp.,Stark Co., Ohio.SL5923. MARY, b. ca. 1780; d. before 1850.SL5924. ELIZABETH, b. 10 June 1784; d. 11 Sept. 1840, Biglick Twp.,Hancock Co., Ohio.SL5925. SUSANNA, b. 18 Dec. 1789; d. 30 May 1860, Biglick Twp., HancockCo., Ohio. The First probable entry in the public records relating to SL592 Jacob Shively is a deeddated 17 Nov. 1768 in which he and his wife Elizabeth Ulrich Shively deeded her part ofthe Stephen's Hope tract to Anthony Hartman in consideration of the sum of "sixty poundscurrent money of Pennsylvania" (Frederick Co., Md., Land Records, Book L, p. 559,560). Elizabeth Shively had been deeded this property on 18 Nov. 1766 by StephenUlrich, Sr. and Nicholas Martin as Elizabeth Ulrich, indicating that she was not married atthis date. She obtained title by payment of £48, probably in some type of distribution ofproperty by her father, Stephen Ulrich, Sr.The history of SL592 Jacob Shively is clouded by the vexing question of hismarriage(s). The Stephen's Hope tract was located in the Middle Creek Valley in FrederickCo., some miles distant from the Shively homestead west of Conococheague Creek. However, both the Shivelys and the Ulrichs were of the German Baptist Brethren faith andwere doubtless well enough acquainted to account for a marriage between SL592 JacobShively and Elizabeth Ulrich. If the family tradition is correct that Jacob's wife was bornin 1738, she would have been about nine or ten years older than he would have been. The1GI contains an entry of the birth of a Jacob Shively about 1766 in Washington Co., Pa.,to Jacob Shively and Elizabeth Snyder. This birthplace is obviously incorrect. The IGIcontains another entry of the birth of a Jacob Shively, Jr., in 1767 in "Frederick,Cumberland Co., Pa." to Jacob Shively, Sr., and Elizabeth Ulrick (sic). Again, thebirthplace seems to be erroneous. It strains credence to believe that there were two JacobShivelys in the same area who produced sons named Jacob Shively at about the same date.Although we may never be able to resolve this matter with certainty, It seems to me probable that SL592 Jacob Shively, b. ca. 1748 was probably married first to Elizabeth Ulrich, b. 1738, who bore SL5921 Jacob Shively, Jr., b. ca. 1767. Presumably she died, and he married Elizabeth Snyder, a younger woman who bore him four more children between 1774 and 1789.
