Selon Frédéric Schmutz (http://membres.multimania.fr/hohwald/encore.htm) : "Le Hohwald, terrain de chasse préféré des seigneurs du Val de Villé depuis 1125, des comtes d'Andlau et des sires de Dicka, resta inhabité jusque vers 1650, époque où les familles Dolder, Bohy et Ropp arrivèrent du canton de Berne et des bords du lac de Thoune pour défricher et implanter ce qui sera l'embryon des différents hameaux de la Alt-Melkerei, Furstenplatz, Zundelhutte, Neu-Melkerei, Weidenthalhof ou Witterthalhof, Saegemuhle, Louisenthal et Sperberbaechelthal. Sur ce qu'on appelle « Chaume des Veaux » s'élèvent :

- la Vieille Kaelberhutte qui fait partie de la commune de Breitenbach, érigée en ferme en 1829 à  la place d'une grande baraque-abri construite vers 1660, où l'on mettait en été de jeunes bêtes à  cornes à  l'embouche, ce qui justifie son nom. La propriété fut acquise le 11 octobre 1976 par Jean Dolder.

- la ferme-auberge Ropp-Jost fut construite en 1680 et habitée par les Ropp-Kleti en 1793 (Hochfeld sur les cartes).

- le refuge des Amis de la Nature, section de Strasbourg, fut anciennement une ferme, construite vers 1850 (Chaume des Veaux proprement dite sur les cartes).

La ferme de l'Abjuk, ou Lindenhutte (actuellement encore de vieux tilleuls l'ombragent), a été construite en 1809 par Johann Bernard Dolder, baptisé le 20.09.1787 à  Breitenbach (Suisse, près de Laufen entre Bâle et Délémont, à  ne pas confondre avec le Breitenbach d'Alsace). Ses descendants possèdent encore l'original du « Heimatschein » délivré par les autorités du canton de Berne."
