John Miller Sr. was called Johannes Annes Mueller (or Muller) in the "old country". Some accounts of Amish say Muller while others say the people from Switzerland spelled their name Mueller. John was one of the many Amish Mennonite people who left Europe through the port of Rotterdam. The Anabaptists in Holland gave their brethren food and shelter while they arranged for, and awaited, passage to America.

John Hannes Miller, often called "Indian John" or "Crippled John" or "Wounded John," because he was wounded by the Indians when they were taking the family of Jacob Hostetler into captivity. John was born to Christian Daniel Miller. He was about 19 years old when he came to America on the ship "Phoenix" arriving in Philadelphia on September 15, 1749. There were several other MIller's on the ship and Benedict Lehman was among those aboard also. Benedict and John settled in Berks County, on the Northkill Creek, as neighbors. Benedict is believed to be the father of John's wife, Magdalena. Hannes married Magdalena Lehman. They had ten children--5 sons and 6 daughters, all born in Somerset County, OH. Their names are:

John "Hannas" Miller, Jr. --- married Veronica "Freny" Yoder

Jacob "Yockel" Miler --- married Anna Stutzman Miler

Peter --- married his sister-in-law, Mary Stutzman (Anna's sister)

Joseph ---married Barbara Speicher (2 of his sister's married Barbara's brothers)

Catherine ---married Jacob Kauffman

Maria or Mary ---married John Schrock, Jr.

Veronica or Freny -- married Christian Speicher (brother of Joseph's wife Barbara)

Susanna (?) ---married Christian Mishler

Elizabeth -- married Joseph Speicher (brother of Joseph's wife Barbara and sister Freny's husband Christian)


Hannes and Magdalena stayed in Elklick township for only eleven years. The first four children married, settled and stayed in Elklick or Summit township. Hannes and Magdalena moved with the younger children to the Glades. He Miller bought a farm from Abraham Coxson.

"Hannes, Sr., and his wife lived together in the Glades only from 1786 to 1798, twelve years, altough Magdalena lived another nineteen years. Hannes died at about age sixty-eight, an average age for that time, but not a great age." (see source below -- page 9)

"On the Maust Farm itself is a small cemetery with several markers, only one of which has an inscription. It reads: "M1817M," which we could interpret as: Magdalena Miller, died 1817." "The gravestone of John, Sr. is no longer there."(see source below -- pgs. 22 & 119)
