CHRISTIAN SCHAUBLIN Baptized 5 Feb. 1684 in Oberdorf; died perhaps ca. 1752 in Warwick Twp.,Lancaster Co., Pa.: mar. 14 July 1708 in Oberdorf, Barbara Spitler of Bennwil, born 9 Aug. 1689, died 9 Jan. 1759, Warwick Twp., Lancaster Co., Pa. Thirteen children, all baptized in Oberdorf. SL51. Margareth, bapt. 21 July 1709. SL52. Hans Jacob, bapt. 2 Apr. 1711. SL53. Barbara, bapt. 8 Jan. 1713.SL54. Margareth, bapt. 12 Feb. 1714. SL55. Durs, bapt. 24 Aug. 1720.SL59. ULRICH, bapt. 8 Jan. 1722; died ca. 1776, Frederick Co., Md. SL50. Anna, bapt. 6 Nov. 1723.SL5a. Jacob, bapt. 19 May 1726. SL5b. Ursula, bapt. 14 March 1728.SL5c. Magdalena, bapt. 18 May 1730.The baptismal date of SL5 Christian Schaublin agrees reasonably well with the 1736 passenger list, which states that he was then 53 years old (Strassburger & Hinke, 1934, v.1, p. 162, 163). The dates of birth and death of Barbara Spitler Schaublin are given by Black (1941, p. 1), and I am not sure of their source. The marriage register states that Christian Schaublin was from the village of Oberdorf and that Barbara Spitler was fron the village of Bennwil. The baptismal records state that Christian Schaublin had the occupation of smith at Oberdorf.Faust & Brumbaugh (1925, p. 104, 105) record an entry in the manumission registers of the State Archives of Basel regarding the emigration of Christian and Barbara Schaublin in 1736. It indicates that they and seven children — Christian, Jr., Uhli (Ulrich),Barbara, Catharina, Anna, Ursula, and Magdalena — emigrated in that year. This record states that he had property worth 1700 Basel pounds on which he was taxed 190 Basel pounds upon receiving permission to emigrate. This would have reduced his net worth to 1510 Basel pounds, the equivalent to about £201 Pennsylvania currency of that time. Some insight into Christian Schaublin's reasons for leaving Switzerland is given by Faust& Brumbaugh (1925, p. 105):"He and his wife had also not remained untouched by the pietistic movement and early in 1722 Gmeli, who emigrated to Pennsylvania later on, had held a meeting attheir smithy which caused much sensation. In 1736 he had to answer a charge of'Quakerism'. In 1740 he was still living in Pennsylvania."
